2021 So Far
As we near the mid-point of the year, restrictions are easing, life feels a little more normal, and optimism is returning to the market. So what have we learned over the course of the last 5 months?
Risk Management
Hiring managers across the industry are as demanding as ever when it comes to recruiting the best in class. That is obviously not new but in this kind of market, there is a focus on reducing the risk of people not working out and having to go to market again. Interviews are intensive and concerns are not readily ignored no matter how much personalities may align. The appetite to do at least one stage face-to-face is increasing as offices are opening. Tests and presentations are the norm for most levels now.
Counter-Offers
Employers are terrified of losing staff in this climate, it is taking longer to replace and the knee-jerk reaction to counter causes no end of issues- resentment of why it took a resignation to feel valued, panic in the team that this person will eventually leave anyway and a replacement will need to be found and concern that they didn’t see it coming. An open conversation about how people are doing is essential. Individuals should feel they can talk about issues and yes, that does involve effort whilst we are still in the WFH limbo. Money is never a good motivator to change roles so salary conversations always need to happen ahead of considering a move.
Diversity & Inclusion
This discussion is (thankfully) not going anywhere and is now an integral part of any business’ strategy. Candidates are asking us what a company’s D&I policy is and some agencies are already asking us as recruitment partners to hit certain targets. This is an issue that requires thought and a multi-faceted approach from the top down. We firmly believe that ignoring the appetite of all candidates to work in a balanced, supportive and tolerant culture is dangerous. Engage your colleagues and the team at large in the conversation. Don’t let fear stop progress.
We are already seeing a marked difference in the market and that looks to continue going into the rest of the year.
